The Columbus Blue Jackets® have been part of the hockey world since 2000. Based out of Columbus, Ohio, the team fight their battles at Nationwide Arena. Prior to 1978 the state was home to the Cleveland Barons, but upon their departure Ohio was without a NHL® team for more than 20 years.
Then in 1997, Columbus was awarded an NHL® expansion team. Columbus was the proud owner of a new stadium and a new team whose logo and title were both inspired by Ohio's Civil War history. The team hit the ice in 2000, losing their initial match up to the Chicago Blackhawks®. Regardless of the team's record, fans were psyched to have a hockey team back in town creating a huge demand for Columbus Blue Jackets® tickets.
Similar to many teams just out of the gate, the Ohio team's tempo of play was uneven. To help energize fans, the franchise used a reproduction of a late 19th century cannon in the arena, firing it whenever the team hits the ice at the start of a game, score a goal or win the match. Matched up against some serious heavies, the team quickly took on fierce rivalries with the Nashville Predators®, St. Louis Blues®, Chicago Blackhawks® and Detroit Red Wings®. Who knows what the future holds when the team launches onto the ice with conviction heavy in their sticks. |
