Founded in 1924, the Boston Bruins are the oldest NHL team in the U.S. The Bruins were one of the Original Six franchise teams in the league, along with the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Redwings and Montreal Canadiens.
The team’s original colors were brown and yellow, a scheme that represented their bear-like title. The Bruins began playing home games at the Boston Garden in 1928, and continued playing there for 67 seasons until 1995. The 1928-1929 season would also mark the team’s first Stanley Cup victory. During the 1929-1930 season, the team boasted a league record for highest regular season winning percentage, 0.875, the best season in NHL history to date.
Several of the Bruins’ prominent players of the era enlisted during WWII after the team won the Stanley Cup at the end of the 1940-41 season. The Bruins struggled from the late 1940s through the late 1960s, though the team still managed to make three appearances in the Stanley Cup finals during this period. In the mid 1950s, the Bruins were the first team to start using the now ubiquitous Zamboni.
For the first time in nearly three decades, the Bruins brought home the Stanley Cup in 1970. The team won the trophy again in 1972 and 2011, making them Stanley Cup champions six times since 1924. The Bruins again advanced through the playoffs to the Stanley Cup finals in 2013, but lost to bitter rivals the Chicago Blackhawks.
Notable former Bruins players include Eddie Shore, Bobby Orr, Milt Schmidt, Ray Bourque and Johnny Bucyk.
The Bruins have played at TD Garden since 1995. The arena is also home to the Boston Celtics. TD Garden can hold nearly 18,000 hockey fans. The Sports Museum of New England is also located within the facility. Buy your Bruins tickets now to see this historic NHL team play at TD Garden!
