The Indiana Pacers franchise began in 1967 as a founding member of the American Basketball Association (ABA). Led by perennial All-Star, MVP, and Hall of Fame center Mel Daniels (2012), Hall of Fame coach Bobby "Slick" Leonard (2014), and Hall of Fame guard Roger Brown (2013), forward George McGinnis and many others, the Pacers made five ABA Finals appearances and won three championships (1970, 72, and 73). The Pacers are considered the most dominant team in ABA history.
In 1976, four teams from the ABA merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA), a group that included the Pacers. With the core of their ABA Championship team no longer together, the NBA Pacers struggled to gain a solid footing. In 1983, brothers Mel and Herb Simon bought the Pacers and established a foundation for success. Beginning in 1989-90, star shooting guard and future Hall of Famer Reggie Miller led the Pacers to the playoffs 16 out of the next 17 seasons. During that stretch, the Pacers made it to the Eastern Conference Finals six times with one trip to the NBA Finals in 2000.
The Pacers returned to the playoffs following the 2010-11 season and have made it each season since. In the 2013 playoffs, they lost in the Eastern Conference Finals to the eventual champ, the Miami Heat, in a thrilling seven-game series. In 2014, the Pacers earned the number-one seed in the East.
The Pacers play in Bankers Life Fieldhouse, which opened in 1999. With clear sightlines, museum-style exhibits celebrating Indiana basketball history, and the NBA's best new scoreboard, Bankers Life Fieldhouse is considered by many to be the world's premier venue in which to watch a basketball game.
