Interesting Tidbits
On top of submitting a name for the team, entrants could also send in predictions of the winner and score of the 1965 game between Notre Dame and University of Miami. Mrs. Robert Swanson successfully predicted the outcome of the game, which was a scoreless tie, and won lifetime passes to Dolphin games.
Since 1966, the Miami Dolphins have played in two stadiums. From 1966-1986 the Dolphins played at the Miami Orange Bowl. From 1987 to present day, they have played at Dolphin Stadium (which was called Joe Robbie Stadium from 1987-1996, Pro Player Stadium from 1997-2004 and Dolphins Stadium since 2005).
Championships
The Miami Dolphins have won a Super Bowl Championship twice. In 1972 (VII) they had a perfect undefeated season, and they followed up in 1973 with Super Bowl VIII. They have won the Division Championship an incredible 12 times in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1992, 1994, and 2000. They achieved a Conference Championship five times in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1982, and 1984.
History
The Miami Dolphins are members of the Eastern Division in the American Football Conference in the NFL. They were established in 1966 as an expansion team founded by lawyer Joseph Robbie and actor Danny Thomas. They joined the NFL after the AFL-NFL merger. The Dolphins are the oldest major-league sports franchise in the state of Florida. In their first four seasons, the Dolphins had a combined record of 15-39-2. Head Coach Don Schula’s strategy for the team involved four workouts a day, but it paid off when the Dolphins improved their record to 10-4 which was good enough to appear in their first Playoff game.
The Dolphins success continued through into the 1970’s, making them the first team to advance to the Super Bowl in three consecutive seasons. By 1972, the Dolphins completed the NFL’s only perfect season, winning every regular season game, two Playoff games, and Super Bowl VII. It was a season of firsts, and a number of records for the relatively new team. Prior to the 1972 Dolphins, only the 1934 and 1942 Chicago Bears had finished an NFL regular season with no losses or ties. The next 10 seasons featured 10+ regular season wins, and another Super Bowl Championship in 1973.
In the 1980’s, David Woodley and Don Strock took over the quarterback position from Bob Griese, who had to retire after the season owing to a severe shoulder injury. The two split the position during the season and were collectively known as “Woodstrock.” They made it back to the top of the AFC East in 1981 with a record of 11-4-1. They reached the Divisional Playoffs, but fell to the San Diego Chargers in overtime despite the closeness of the game and an incredible comeback by the Dolphins after the first half. A players strike shortened the 1982 season, and the Dolphins “Killer B’s” defense (Bob Baumhower, Bill Barnett, Lyle Blackwood, Kim Bokamper, Glenn Blackwood, Doug Betters, and Bob Brudzinski) kept other teams to 14 or fewer points. They shut out the New York Jets 14-0 in the AFC Championship, but lost Super Bowl XVII to the Washington Redskins 27-17. By 1983, a new name had appeared in the quarterback position. Rookie Dan Marino helped the Dolphins on to an AFC Championship with a ratio of 20 touchdowns to six interceptions. Marino’s first year on the team won him a Rookie of the Year award despite an upset in the Divisional Playoffs by the Seattle Seahawks. The 1980’s showed a string of successes, including four AFC Division Championships, and two Conference Championships.
They lost a bit of steam in the 1990’s through 2000’s. They were still able to take home a Division Championship in 1992, 1994 and 2000, but haven’t brought home another Playoff win since. With new Head Coach Bill Parcells, the Miami Dolphins have a lot to look forward to in bringing another post-season win to Florida.
