Team Factoids

The Kansas City Chiefs logo shows a white arrowhead with a black outline. The center of the Arrowhead shows an interlocking KC with a black outline.

Team colors are Red, Yellow, White, and Black.

The Chiefs have played in Arrowhead Stadium since 1972.

Their best season was in 1968 with a record of 12-2, and their worst season was in 1977 with a record of 2-12.

The Chiefs have an official team band called the TD Pack Band. Their mascot is the KC Wolf and Warpaint.

Interesting Tidbits
Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt came up with the name for the biggest football game ever, the Super Bowl. Hunt thought of the name while watching his children play with a popular toy from the time; a “super ball.”

While playing as the Dallas Texans, the team’s logo was a white state of Texas with a yellow star denoting Dallas. Since their move to Kansas City, however, the logo shows a white arrowhead with the initials “KC” interlocking. Rumor says the logo was drawn by former owners Lamar Hunt on a dinner napkin. In recent years, many NFL teams have gone through uniform changes, but Kansas City has stayed true to their colors over the past several decades.

In their entire franchise history, the Kansas City Chiefs have played in three different stadiums. The first was the Cotton Bowl in Texas when the team played as the Dallas Texans. They remained in the Cotton Bowl from 1960-1962 when they moved to Municipal Stadium in 1963, being renamed as the Kansas City Chiefs. From 1972 to present day, the Chiefs play at Arrowhead Stadium, which is also a popular spot for many of the Big 12 college football games.

The Kansas City Chiefs were the first-ever team to play an NFL team as part of the AFL-NFL Super Bowl Championship against the Green Bay Packers.

Championships
The Kansas City Chiefs have won the Division Championship seven times. While with the AFL West they won in 1962 and 1966. While with the AFC West, they won in 1971, 1993, 1995, 1997, and 2003. While the Chiefs haven’t won a Conference Championship, they have won three League Championships. They won the AFL Championship in 1962, 1966 and 1969, and won the AFL-NFL Super Bowl Championship (IV) in 1969.

History
The Kansas City Chiefs are members of the Western Division of the American Football Conference in the NFL. The team was established in 1960 as the Dallas Texans, sharing the Cotton Bowl with cross-town rival the Dallas Cowboys. After the first two seasons of the franchise, owner Lamar Hunt was looking to move the team to another city even though the team was boasting an 11-3 record. They appeared in their first American Football League Championship game against state-mates the Houston Oilers gathering national attention, and establishing the AFL as a relevant league. The Texans went on to defeat the Oilers 20-17 in double-overtime, the longest game in American football (until the Chiefs played the Dolphins in 1971). The Chiefs played three seasons in Dallas, and it took that amount of time for the Dallas area to discover they could not support two football franchises from two rival leagues. On May 22, 1963 the Texans were moved to Kansas City after May H. Roe Bartle told Hunt he could triple ticket sales. On May 26, 1963, the team was renamed to the Chiefs, which was the most popular suggestions in the fan naming contest. It was also in honor of Mayor Bartle’s nickname “The Chief.”

The Chiefs went on to set a number of records for the striving AFL with the most Playoff appearances (tied with Oakland), the most AFL Championships (3) and the most Super Bowl appearances. It was Kansas City’s dominance that helped Hunt negotiate with the NFL Commissioner to agree to an AFL-NFL merger. Hunt insisted the last game be called the Super Bowl, the name for which he came up with after watching his children play with a “super ball”, which was a popular toy from the time. The Chiefs won the 1966 AFL Championship game against the Buffalo Bills, and were invited to play the NFL Champion the Green Bay Packers in the first ever AFL-NFL World Championship Game. It was close for most of the first half, but Green Bay took control in the final two quarters to end with a Packer 35-10 victory.

By 1970 the Chiefs were beginning to struggle, winning only seven games in their first season in the NFL. The next year, however, the Chiefs bounced back with a 10-3-1 record mark and AFC West Division Championship. It was this season where the Chiefs beat their own longest game record against the Miami Dolphins for the AFC Championship. Miami scored a 37-yard field goal in the 82nd minute of the game, ending the Chiefs Playoff run.

Arrowhead Stadium construction had finished by 1972 and the Chiefs moved into their new home. They broke in the new stadium with a 24-14 win against the St. Louis Cardinals. However, the remainder of the 70’s was not as fortunate, as the Chiefs would not head to the Playoffs again until the late 80’s. Tragedy struck the Chiefs when running back, Joe Delaney, died in a drowning accident, and the NFL Players Associate strike put the Chiefs hopes of heading to the postseason on the bench. By the late 1980’s, Lamar had hired Carl Peterson as the new General Manager, and Peterson wasted no time in making changes to the roster and staff. Peterson hired Marty Schottenheimer, who worked with Peterson to rebuild the roster by drafting from the bottom up. In less than 10 years, the team had a complete renovation, clinching seven Playoff berths. Chiefs tickets to every home game began selling out, a streak that has continued nearly 20 years later. The Chiefs also ensure a strong fan base by playing a number of Big 12 college football games at Arrowhead Stadium.

By 1993, the Chiefs enjoyed their most successful season in 22 years. After acquiring quarterback Joe Montana and running back Marcus Allen, the team went on to 11-5, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Houston Oilers to appear in the AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills. They lost the game 30-13 and haven’t won a post-season victory since. However, their strong draft class will make them a team to keep your eyes on in the seasons to come. They have had their glory in the first years of the franchise, and have been looking to bring that back to Kansas City ever since.
