Biography
John Clayton Mayer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on October 16, 1977. Mayer is the middle child in a family of three sons. His fascination with the guitar came after watching Marty McFly’s musical performance from Back to the Future. When he was 13, his father rented a guitar for him, where he’s played ever since. His parents weren’t entirely convinced of his love affair for the guitar, but Mayer’s passion for the blues and constant practice led him to playing at bars and small venues while in high school. During this time, he not only had several solo adventures, but was also a member of a band called Villanova Junction. At 17, Mayer discovered he was suffering from cardiac arrhythmia, a condition involving abnormal electric activity in the heart causing heartbeat irregularity, and was sent to the hospital for a couple days. Some time later, Mayer recognized that moment as “…the moment the songwriter in me was born.” It was the day he got home from the hospital that he wrote his first lyrics.
John Mayer enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts when he was 19. He cut his studies after two years and moved to Atlanta, Georgia with friend and future co-writer Clay Cook. The two formed a duo called LoFi Masters, and performed frequently at coffee houses and clubs. After Mayer started looking for more of a pop sound, Cook decided the two should separate and Mayer’s career went solo. Mayer’s first album,
Inside Wants Out, was released on September 24, 1999 featuring his first hit song “No Such Thing.” The single was the launch of his incredible career, and his name has been seen and heard around the world.
