If you are going to try and ride the wave of bands getting back together,
PLAY SOME OF YOUR POPULAR MUSIC.
The first 45 minutes was so bad we left. Don't know what they played after that but they sounded like a deranged gospel group for the most part. I can usually find something good about a performance but really truly not this time.
Alpha Rev opened and Band Of Heathens followed. I am not a fan of Alpha Rev AT ALL, the lady with me is and that is one of the reasons we settled on this since I like The Black Crows. (or at least I thought I did) Alpha Rev did however blow Band of Heathens (Country GAG Choke) and Black Crows off the stage.
Sad really. Black Crows have a few songs that I really like but they didn't bother to play them, at least we couldn't stomach the first of the set long enough to find out if they did play anything that made them popular. I kept saying give them a minute and they'll play something good, when she turned to me and said, I don't like them, but it never happened.
Whitewater Amphitheater is a decent venue. We were in the preferred seating section which had nice roomy seats and a great view. The audio system is pretty good. There was an echo off the sky box seats but it wasn't horrible or terribly distracting or anything like that. 1000 times better than Austin Music Hall.
Friendly, courteous helpful staff. Great Bar lay out with prompt service.
I would recommend that you get the preferred seating, a table (6 people) or a Sky Box (probably 6 with table service) if at all possible. The rest is standing only and pretty dusty. Sort of like Stubbs in Austin. The Sky Boxes are a pretty far from the stage which is the only really bad thing about them. Bring binoculars, you will need them.
Hopefully they will continue to grow this venue long enough to get some really talented bands there. So far, that doesn't seem to be happening. At least not with bands that I would prefer to hear.
The drunk guy spilling beer on us didn't help but that was minor compared to the train wreck of a concert.
Overall a very disappointing evening.

I've been a Crowes fan since Shake Your Money Maker hit the shelves back in the 80's. I've been very pleased with their recent studio work (War Paint & Before the Frost/Until the Freeze) and was pumped to see them in a great venue.
Basically, the sound quality was awful. I could have attributed to production problems etc. had the warm up act, Truth and Salvage Company, not sounded soooo good.
Although they didn't play much old stuff, I'm into the newer tunes enough to really enjoy the show.... aside from the sound.
Even though I've seen the band live previously, this concert is probably my last time to see the Black Crowes live due to the poor sound. Guess I'll have to settle for the studio stuff :(

The rhythm guitarist (Chris' bro) & bassist barely moved, but their playing was tops. My only real complaints were too much loose, endless jamming/noodling and, with the exception of a couple of songs, they completely ignored their pre-Lions stuff. Gotta respect them playing what they enjoy, though I would've liked to hear some older songs, too. As for the sound, you can't get any better than the Ryman (Grand Ole Opry). It's as if the entire structure reverberates with the music. Amazing. Chris' voice was gorgeous and chillingly soulful. Very solid show.

The Black Crowes and the Black Keys were wonderful and the entire evening was fantastic! I had a great time, the crowd was chill and it was a beautiful summer evening to be outside at a show!
