History
The Indianapolis Colts are members of the South Division of the American Football Conference in the NFL. The team was established in 1953 in Baltimore, Maryland when a group led by Carroll Rosenbloom won the rights to a new franchise when the Dallas Texans team had failed in a number of different cities. By 1958, the Indianapolis Colts were being led by head coach Weeb Ewbank and quarterback Johnny Unitas. They defeated the New York Giants at Yankee Stadium with a score of 23-17 to win the NFL Championship. They repeated in the following year, defeating the Giants again with a score of 31-16. The Vikings made it to the NFL Championship game for the third year in a row in 1960 but lost. They met the Browns in 1968 in the NFL Championship game, bringing home a win with a score of 34-0. It was around that time the sports media began calling the 13-1 regular season Colts the “greatest pro football of all time.”

The NFL Championship game took on the name Super Bowl in 1967, and the Colts appeared in the third Super Bowl against the New York Jets in 1969. However, the Colts could not trump the dynamic duo of Joe Namath and Matt Snell, giving the Jets a winning score of 16-7. Prior to the start of the 1970 season, other teams were beginning to take part in the joining of the two professional football leagues in the AFL-NFL merger. The Colts followed suit, and brought home an 11-3 regular season record. They played in the first ever post-merger Super Bowl against the Dallas Cowboys, defeating the 16-13. Through the rest of their time in Baltimore, the Colts would take home win after win, but falling short of the Conference Championship every year.

By 1984, the Colts lease expired with Memorial Stadium, and the owner wanted Baltimore to upgrade or build a new stadium for the team. However, with attendance at all-time lows during the team’s bad seasons, city officials weren’t jumping at the opportunity for an upgrade. The Colts began looking for a new location, and had Indianapolis and Phoenix in mind. Indianapolis, however, showed an extreme amount of interest in bringing the team there, especially after the Hoosier Dome (later the RCA Dome) was built specifically for the purpose of hosting an NFL team. The Colts played their first game in Indianapolis on September 2, 1984. Their first few years in Indy were faced with challenges on the field. The first three seasons all ended in losses (below .500). They dismissed head coach Rod Dowhower, and brought former Patriots head coach Ron Meyer to replace him. By 1987, the Colts had made their first Playoff game for the first time in a decade, winning the AFC East against the New York Jets. The Colts would not return to the Playoffs again until the 1995 season when they clinched a wild card berth. They made it as far as the AFC Championship game which was lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Their most recent success has come in the form of one man and one position. Quarterback Peyton Manning was their first pick in the 1998 NFL Draft. In 1999, the Colts finished 13-3 but were eliminated by the Tennessee Titans in the Divisional Playoffs. In the 2003 NFL season, Manning was named co-MVP with quarterback Steve McNair from the Titans. The Colts won the AFC South to break the tie over the Tennessee Titans, and defeated the Denver Broncos in the Divisional Playoffs. The Colts had hopes for a perfect season in 2005 reaching a record of 13-0, but lost to the San Diego Chargers 26-17. Their final record of 14-2 marked the best 16-game season in franchise history.

On February 4, 2007, the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Chicago Bears at Dolphin Stadium for Super Bowl XLI. Manning won MVP again after completing 25 of 38 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown. For the fall of 2008, the Colts will be leaving the RCA Dome after 24 seasons of play, and moving into Lucas Oil Stadium. This seven-level stadium with retractable roof will seat 63,000 fans for football. It can be reconfigured to seat 70,000 for NCAA basketball or football games and concerts.
