History
The Green Bay Packers are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference in the NFL. They were founded on August 11, 1919 when former high-school football rivals Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun decided to start up a football team. Lambeau requested funds from his employer, the Indian Packing Company, in order to purchase uniforms and equipment. He was given $500, on the condition that he named the team after their sponsor. The Green Bay Packers is the oldest team-name in the NFL that is still in use. The Packers became members of the newly formed professional football league (American Professional Football Association or APFA) on August 20, 1920. The team suffered financial troubles in their first year, but Lambeau was determined and found new backers, known as the “Hungry Five,” to regain the franchise. Today, the “Hungry Five” are known as the Green Bay Football Corporation.
When APFA became known as the NFL the Packers had achieved a number of winning seasons. During the late 20’s and early 30’s, the Green Bay Packers won three straight NFL titles (1929, 1930 and 1931), becoming the only team to have accomplished this. By the late 60’s, the Packers had done it again with another three championships in a row (1965, 1966 and 1967). Head Coach Vince Lombardi helped the Packers to win five league championships in seven years, including the first two Super Bowl Championships (1967 and 1968). Their first game with Lombardi as Head Coach took place on September 27, 1959 against the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field, resulting in the Packers shutting out the Bears. In 1960, the Packers had captured the NFL West Title, and went on to play the Philadelphia Eagles at Philadelphia, resulting in a Packers loss.
Lombardi’s last season with the Packers as head coach was in 1967. The NFL Championships game from that year was known as the “Ice Bowl.” With 16 seconds left on the clock, Bart Starr’s touchdown brought the Packers their third straight NFL Championship. Lombardi became General Manager in 1968, naming Phil Bengston as Head Coach. Between 1968 and 1991, the Packers had marginal successes, with only five winning seasons out of 24. A number of poor drafting choices shaped most of the seasons during this dismal period. In 1989, Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders and Derrick Thomas were available during the draft, but the Packers chose offensive lineman Tony Mandarich instead (whose performance failed to meet expectations).
In 1991, Ron Wolf was hired to take over full control of the team and operations, and in 1992 he hired San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Holmgren to take over the Head Coach position. Wolf’s first line of duty for the coming season was acquiring quarterback Brett Favre from the Atlanta Falcons. With Favre’s help, the Packers achieved their first win of the 1992 season. Favre started in 271 consecutive games, which is a current NFL record for a quarterback. The Packers also signed the most prized free agent, Reggie White, for the defense. White and Favre brought the Packers to the second round of Playoffs during the 1993 and 1994 seasons. By 1995, the Packers had won the NFC Central Division for the first time since 1972.
Finally, by 1996, the Packers had turned around to bring a league best record of 13-3 during the regular season. They advanced to the Super Bowl for XXXI in 1997 winning against the New England Patriots 35-21. On March 4, 2008, Brett Favre announced his retirement, and in recent news, Favre is in between moving to the Minnesota Vikings and staying put in Green Bay. Favre is waiting on the Packers before he makes his next move. Make sure you have the best Packers tickets around for the games you want to see at Lambeau Field. Packers tickets are hotter than ever!
