Barry Manilow Tickets

Barry Alan Pincus was born on June 17, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents divorced when he was two, and Barry was raised by his mother and grandparents who were said to have a strong influence on his life. It was his grandparents that encouraged him to follow his musical abilities after he took up playing the accordion. His first recording session was at the age of 5 with his grandfather, singing “Happy Birthday” inside a coin-operated recording booth. It was a present for his cousin Dennis. This recording can be heard on the opening track of his first album, Barry Manilow I.

As a teenager Barry spent his time listening to his stepfather’s jazz and swing records, idolizing Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Nelson Riddle and Harold Arlen. His stepfather gave him his first piano on his 13th birthday. This was the time that his mother dropped her surname and changed it to her maiden name Manilow. He performed at many small businesses and parties over the next few years even before graduating high school.

Manilow worked at the mailroom at CBS to pay his way through the New York College of Music and The Julliard School. In 1964, he met Bro Herrod, director from CBS, who asked him to arrange some songs for an adaptation of the musical The Drunkard. Manilow responded to that by completely arranging an original score. It was an instant success and ran Off-Broadway for 8 years.

Barry’s career was slow to start out with. He worked on jingles for Band-Aid, Pepsi, Jack in the Box and Dr. Pepper to name a few. It wasn’t until he worked with Bette Midler that he began to get some attention. He worked with her for four years, and released his first album in 1973 through Bell Records (now called Arista Records).

Manilow has been involved in over 40 albums. Some are his albums including greatest hits and compilations and some are soundtracks. A number of his singles on these albums have spent a significant amount of time in the No. 1 spot, including “Mandy”, “I Write The Songs” and “Can’t Smile Without You”.

He has won a number of awards for his music including Grammys, Emmys and Tony awards. He has also appeared on Television and movies like the Donny & Marie show in 1976 and has been a guest judge for American Idol and worked with the top seven finalists in 2004.
