Marijuana advocates started the Free Tommy Chong! movement calling for his release, stating that he received unfair treatment so as to make an example of him. When asked about the difference in sentences between Chong and the other 54 individuals, US Attourney Mary Beth Buchanan stated “(Chong) wasn’t the biggest supplier. He was a relatively new player, but he had the ability to market products like no other.”

Biography
Richard Anthony Marin (Cheech Marin) was born on July 13, 1946 in Los Angeles, California. After graduating from California State University Northridge, he fled to Vancouver, British Columbia to dodge the Vietnam War draft in 1968. It was in British Columbia that Cheech met his future comedic partner Tommy Chong. Thomas B. Kin Chong was born on May 24, 1938 in Edmonton, Alberta.
The comedy duo became famous in the 1970’s and 1980’s for their stand-up routines based on the hippie era. Themes include free love, and frequently drug-culture movements. The duo released a number of comedy albums, many of which went on to enjoy large success, and they also starred in low-budget films. Comedy routines that have become famous over the years include “Earache My Eye,” “Basketball Jones,” “Santa Claus and his Old Lady,” and “Sister Mary Elephant.” An all-time famous line from their career is “Dave’s not here.” The duo released Get Out of My Room in 1985, which included the hit song “Born in East L.A.” which was based on Bruce Springsteen’s huge hit “Born in the U.S.A.” The song served as the basis for their later film by the same name.
After the release of the album, Cheech and Chong went their separate ways to nurture their solo careers. Cheech went on to provide his voice for a number of animated films from Disney’s Oliver and Company (1988) to The Lion King (1994) and Cars (2004). His recent work was an appearance in the film Christmas with the Kranks. Chong’s solo career involved work on the film Far Out Man, which also had Cheech making an appearance. Chong also co-starred in That 70’s Show playing the character Leo, a burned-out hippie (much like his character in the 1978 film Up in Smoke.
The two reunited for an episode of South Park, though their voices were recorded separately. The two had a falling out after the 80’s, and their friendship was on the fritz for many years after that. There were plans in the works for the two to reunite on another film, but Chong’s California-based company “Chong’s Bongs” was raided by the Feds on February 25, 2003. Chong pleaded guilty to drug paraphernalia distribution charges and on September 11, 2003 was sentenced to 9 months in federal prison. After Chong was released, there were rumors that the duo would still reunite, but on September 8, 2005, the two announced that their reunion film had been cancelled. Chong, however, hinted in an interview in 2007 that the reunion may be back on.
On June 3, 2008, Chong announced that he would be reuniting with Cheech for a comedy tour, with Shelby Chong, his wife, opening for the two. Chong also announced his intention to do a movie with Cheech that is based on their reuniting and will include live samples from their comedy tour. On July 30, 2008, Cheech and Chong announced that their comedy tour titled “Hey, What’s That Smell?” would begin in Philadelphia on September 12, 2008.
