Team Factoids
The team was named as a result of the winning entry in a naming contest. It was the name of a previous football franchise in the All-American Football Conference called the Buffalo Bills.

Official mascot for the Buffalo Bills is Billy Buffalo. He made his debut in 2000 at Orchard Park in New York. He is an eight foot tall blue American Buffalo. He became the team’s full time mascot in 2003.

The Bills are currently playing at two stadiums during the regular season. Since 1973 the Bills have played at Ralph Wilson Stadium, and will be playing one game per season at Rogers Centre.

The team logo shows a charging blue Buffalo with a red streak coming from his white horns.

Team colors of the Buffalo Bills are Navy, Red, White, and Blue.

The Buffalo Bills’ best season was in 1964 with a 12-2 record. Their worst season was in 1971 with a 1-13 record.

Interesting Tidbits
The Buffalo Bills are the only team to win four consecutive AFC Championships without having won the Super Bowl.

Their first game ever was played on September 11, 1960.

In 1964 and 1965 the Bills won two consecutive American Football League titles, but unfortunately have not won a league championship since the merger. Also in 1964, the Bills established a defensive record of allowing only 913 yards rushing on 300 attempts which stands today as a pro football record.

While with the AAFC in 1946, Buffalo’s team name was actually the Bisons. In 1947, a contest was held to rename the team, with the winning entry suggesting the Bills for the famous frontiersman Buffalo Bill Cody.

From 1962-1973, the Buffalo Bills logo showed a red standing Bison.

Championships
As members of the AFL East, the Buffalo Bills won the Division Championship in 1964, 1965 and 1966. While with the AFC East, the Bills won in 980, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, and 1995. The Bills won the AFC Championship in 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993. AFL Championships were won by the Bills in 1964 and 1965. The Buffalo Bills have yet to win a Super Bowl Championship.

History
Based in Buffalo, New York, the Buffalo Bills are members of the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference in the NFL. The Bills were established in 1959 and began play in 1960 as members of the American Football League. They joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL merger.

The team was formed when Detroit Lions minority owner, Ralph Wilson, decided to field a team in the newly formed American Football League, which was formed by Lamar Hunt. Wilson first tried to establish a team in Miami but was unsuccessful. He then turned to Buffalo, New York, and when he achieved success there, Wilson sent the now-famous telegram to Hunt: “Count me in with Buffalo.” October 28, 1959 was the official date that the Buffalo Bills became the 8th member of the AFL.

The Bills made slow progress over the course of their football history. After acquiring quarterback Jack Kemp from the San Diego Chargers and running back Cookie Gilchrist from the Canadian Football League, the Bills’ successes began to improve. By the mid-1960’s, the Bills had won AFL Championships twice in a row (1964 and 1964) and were one of three teams to appear in the AFL Championship game three times in a row. They were also the only AFL team to play in the post-season for four consecutive years, beginning in 1963-1966.

During this time, most of the teams in the AFL had a great offense. The Buffalo Bills, on the other hand, were known as a great defensive team. Their 1964 season made them the first AFL team to win 13 games in a single season (including the league championship game). After finishing the 1968 season in last place, the Buffalo Bills earned the first overall pick in the 1969 NFL Draft. They used it to their advantage, and drafted running back O.J. Simpson. In 1970, with Simpson’s help, the Bills found themselves with their first winning record since 1966. During this time, Jim Braxton, Paul Seymour, Joe DeLamielleure, and Simpson made up the “Electric Company” based on their ability to complete dramatic turnarounds on the field. They made it to the NFL Playoffs in 1974, but lost in the first round to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Buffalo Bills didn’t make it to the Playoffs again until 1980. Their season began with a bang when they beat archrivals the Miami Dolphins for the first time in 11 years, going on to win their first AFC East title. During the mid to late 80’s, the Bills would finish atop the AFC East for four consecutive seasons. In 1988, the team finished 13-3, heading to Super Bowl XXV against the New York Giants. They lost with a tiny margin of 20-19 when Scott Norwood’s 47-yard field goal attempt went too wide. In 1991, the Bills went as far as facing the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXVI, but lost 37-24. In 1992, the Bills headed into a Wild Card rematch against the Houston Oilers. At the beginning of the 3rd quarter, the Bills were trailing by 32 points, but went on to score touchdowns on four possessions in a row. They tied the Oilers at the end of regulation which forced the game into overtime. Steve Christie kicked their game-winning field goal, marking the biggest comeback in the history of the NFL with a final score of 41-38. After facing the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Divisional Playoff and the Dolphins in the AFC Championship, the Bills headed to the Super Bowl against the Dallas Cowboys, losing with a score of 52-17. They would lose to the Cowboys again the following season in Super Bowl XXVIII 30-13.

The rebuilding after Jim Kelly and Coach Marv Levy’s retirement continues. The Buffalo Bills are looking to return the dynasty years back to Buffalo, New York.
