Team Factoids
The Ravens logo shows a purple Ravens head with a white beak, red eye and yellow outline. The back of the Raven’s head features a yellow “B.” An alternate logo shows a coat of arms. A black “B” over gold is featured in the top left, a yellow and black checkerboard pattern is featured in the top right, the bottom left shows a cross with alternating red and white, and the bottom right shows a black “R” over gold. Across the top of the coat of arms is the word “Ravens.”
Team colors are Purple, Black, Gold, and White.
Because the Baltimore Ravens are a relatively “new” team in the NFL, they do not have any Hall of Famers, no retired numbers, and no Pro Bowl MVP’s.
The Baltimore Ravens best season was in 2006 with a record of 13-3, with their worst season in 1996 with a record of 4-12.
The Ravens fight song is “Baltimore Ravens Fight Song.”
The team played at Tampa Stadium from 1976-1997. It also went by the name of Houlihan’s Stadium from 1996-1997.
They have three ravens as mascots: Edgar, Allan, and Poe.
Interesting Tidbits
A previous team, known as the Baltimore Colts, had played a successful run in Baltimore, but had moved to Indianapolis in 1984.
The Ravens have played at two stadiums throughout their career. They currently play at M&T Bank Stadium, but it has previously been called NFL Stadium at Camden Yards (in 1998), PSInet Stadium (from 1999-2001) and Ravens Stadium (in 2002). The second stadium was one in which they played during their first years in Baltimore. They played at Memorial Stadium from 1996-1997.
Their nickname was selected after a poll was conducted by local newspaper the Baltimore Sun. There were three finalists for the names including Ravens, which was selected in honor of Edgar Allan Poe and his famous poem “The Raven” which was written while he was living in Baltimore.
The three Raven mascots have their own back-story. Edgar was the first to hatch, and is a tall broad-shouldered raven representative of the “backfield” (linebacker, defensive back, fullback, quarterback…etc). He is the leader of the trio. Allan is shorter, thinner, but quicker than Edgar. This excitable and energetic raven represents the receivers and the running backs on the Baltimore Ravens. Poe, the last to hatch, is short and stout to represent the lineman. He has characteristically been considered slow and lazy, but loveable. He is frequently seen at tailgating parties.
Championships
The Ravens have won two Division Championships in 2003 and 2006, one Conference Championship in 2000, and one Super Bowl Championship (XXXV) in 2000.
History
The Baltimore Ravens are based in Baltimore, Maryland, and are members of the AFC North Division in the NFL. The team was established in 1996 when the Cleveland Browns team was relocated after a blizzard of legal activity. The history of the Cleveland Browns, including name, colors, and stats and records of the franchise remained in Cleveland, while the relocated club, owned by Art Modell would begin play in 1999 as a legal expansion team.
The Ravens first season in 1997 began with a promising 3-1 record. With 11.5 sacks, Peter Boulware was named the AFC Defensive Rookie of the Year, but the season finished with a disappointing 6-9-1. Their second season began in their new stadium, Ravens Stadium, but the Ravens finished with a 6-10 record. Their stadium was renamed in 1999 as PSINet Stadium, and the Ravens moved up to an 8-8 record for the season.
By 2000, things began looking up for the new franchise. They broke two NFL records: holding opposing teams to 165 total points (which beat the previous record of 198 points set by the Chicago Bears in 1985), and beating the Chicago Bears record mark of 187 points in a 16-game season. The Tennessee Titans had a record of 13-3 in the division, which meant the Ravens went into the wild-card round. They beat the Broncos with a score of 21-3, and went on to play Tennessee in the divisional playoff. The game was tied at 10-10 when Al Del Greco attempted a field goal, which was blocked and returned for a touchdown by Anthony Mitchel. Ray Lewis’ interception brought the score up to a winning 24-10. Against the Oakland Raiders, Shannon Sharpe made a 96-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter, and the Ravens won with a score of 16-3. Super Bowl XXXV was played at Tampa against the New York Giants. The Giants only managed a single touchdown, which wasn’t enough to smash the domination brought by the Ravens. With a final score of 34-7, the Ravens became the third wild card team to win the Super Bowl.
By the 2002 season, the Ravens were facing salary cap issues and were forced to cut a number of big names from their roster including Sam Adams, Rod Woodson and Shannon Sharpe. The loss of many other key players caused the team to end at a 7-9 record. The 2003 season was highlighted by a transfer of ownership from Art Model (franchise owner for over 40 years) to Steve Bisciotti. During the 2007 season, the Ravens were considered one of the better teams in the NFL. The Ravens faced the Indianapolis Colts in “Judgement Day” as the meeting was called. It was historic in that it was a new Baltimore team facing an old Baltimore team. Unfortunately, the season ended early for the Baltimore Orioles with a Colts win of 15-6.
