The American Athletic Conference came into existence following the organizational structure of the legacy conference, the Big East Conference. Following the Big East realignment, The American inherited the old Big East's structure. The original Big East's history spanned over 30 years, but eventually ended in the conference split of 2013. That legacy means the conference will immediately take a place at the forefront of Division I athletics, with member schools that have played in a combined five Bowl Championship Series games. Seven of The American's 10 football teams have ranked in the top 13 in the BCS since 2006, and eight of the 10 teams have been in the BCS top 25 in that span.

The 2014-2015 season marked three newcomers to the conference including East Carolina University, Tulane University and the University of Tulsa will join the conference. Then, in the 2015-2016 season, the U.S. Naval Academy joined conference's ranks as a football-only member.

The American Athletic Conference has national exposure on television and the ESPN family of networks. Following the 2013 season, the American Athletic Conference continues to gain unprecedented national exposure.
