While the group first came together in 1998, they didn’t find their true commercial success until the early 2000s. They released an eponymous debut album, 30 Seconds to Mars, in 2002, and gained a good deal of notoriety, but not nearly as much sale volume as the group had hoped. The band’s sophomore effort, however, would change its trajectory forever. Entitled A Beautiful Lie, the second album from 30 Seconds to Mars was released in 2005 and found great success all across the globe.
The release of A Beautiful Lie is a story in and of itself, as Jared Leto’s career as an actor had picked up considerably between the release of the first and second album. In an effort to cater to his schedule, which was dictated by shooting on location for numerous films, the band traveled to four different continents over the course of three years to record the album. The album served as a coming out party for the group, receiving critical acclaim all over the world and earning a platinum designation in the U.S. for selling over a million albums. Two of the group’s most notable songs were also recorded on this album, “The Kill” and “From Yesterday.”
‘A Beautiful Lie’ and Commercial Success
After the release of A Beautiful Lie, the group began to tour more regularly. In 2006 they embarked on a tour of the U.S. known as the Welcome to the Universe Tour. They were joined by several other popular alternative groups such as The Receiving End of Sirens and Head Automatica. The tour was a vast success and included numerous sold out shows. After their American leg, the group officially released A Beautiful Lie in Europe and began to tour abroad.
Following a multi-year litigation battle with their record label EMI, 30 Seconds to Mars released This is War in December 2009. The album was a success and brought the group’s marketing to new heights. Among other promotions, the band members had fans send in photos of their faces and used them to generate more than 2,000 unique covers for the album. The record debuted on the Billboard 200 list at No. 18 and its single “Kings and Queens” became a No. 1 hit on the U.S. Alternative charts.
In spring 2013, the group put out their fourth full-length studio album, Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams to much critical acclaim. Among other recognition, the group won a 2013 MTV Music Video Award for “Best Rock Video” with the single “Up In the Air.”
